I kick the show off this week with a little bit of Van Halen. The story I tell at the top of this show is exactly how it happened. We had no idea who Van Halen were, We went to Hammersmith Odeon in London to see Black Sabbath on their 10th anniversary tour. Van Halen blew us away that night. Sabbath were great as well...
In this show I also play a couple of tracks from Iron Maiden. The tracks come from the Killers album which I loved at the time and still do. Although I think Bruce Dickinson is a better singer in many ways and more suited to Maiden as they grew, I have a massive soft spot for the two albums that Paul Di'Anno sang on. His vocal suited the guttural almost punk metal that Iron Maiden produced back then. They were an outstanding live act, head and shoulders above anything out there within the NWOBHM movement. The tracks I picked from the Iron Maiden album which was released in 1980 was the instrumental Transylvania which leads beautifully into the ethereal track Strange World.
My featured bach this week is Yes... This band is in my opinion one of the best british rock acts ever. They have brought out albums that, make you think, inspire, emerse and blow your mind. The tracks I included are 3 of my favorite Yes tracks, ones that meant a lot to me over the years. I start with Roundabout. This track seriously did blow my mind. Just listen to Chris Squire's bass on this track. It is insane. That coupled with the flow that Bill Bruford brings to the track through his drums and of course the vocals from Jon Anderson and you have a pretty much perfect rock track!
The second track I play from yes in the show is from the Close To The Edge album. The track is Siberian Khatru and it was the track that I simply could not stop listening to at the time. In fact that whole album has a very special place in my heart. The last track is off the Going for the One album and the track I chose was Parallels. To be fair I could have taken any track of this album as well. It came out in 1977, a great year for me. I was 17 years old and going to see bands like Yes, Genesis, Rush and Jethro Tull. Frequenting clubs like the Marquee and almost living at the Hammersmith Odeon as it was back then. I was also playing drums in bands and getting influenced by all this magical music.
